Ball! Ball! Strike!

Thump. Thump. Thump.

It’s a rather steady beat. Not musical. For a moment I’m puzzled. Then I remember — batting cages.

One of my common morning walks takes me along the edge of a recreational business. My mind always put the bowling alley at the top of the list. The mini-golf course contains American Southwest figures and a small waterfall visible from the sidewalk. Signs advertise sand volleyball leagues.

And the batting cages.  Of course, this is St. Louis — home of the best baseball fans in the nation. (Most patient are Cubs fans — but that’s a different story.) And fans, especially the younger ones, like to imitate their heroes. Practice, practice, practice. And since you can’t always find a pitcher whey you need one — some mechanical genius invented the pitching machine. The cage around it soon followed.

This is a test.

Holiday Prep

Are you ready? Do you have a fresh red shirt? A new cap?

You’ve got until Monday to get ready for St. Louis’ unofficial holiday.

Confused? This is a movable celebration in early April. No — not Easter.

Home opening of Baseball!

It may be a religion to some.  Prayers will be offered by many. For good weather. Home runs. Double plays. Winning score. But in general it’s a secular holiday.

It does not matter if you don’t have tickets. After all, Busch Stadium has an occupancy limit. And some employers insist you continue doing your day job. Never mind — tune the radio and catch the score at break time — or pull up coverage on the computer and let it run in the background for a quick check now and then.

The Home Team

Be prepared. To sing. To cheer. To stand at a moment’s notice.

A prepared fan arrives early and has ticket in hand for the scanner and bag packed to pass the security check. Then it’s off to study the signs, find the proper section and seat. For thrifty fans this includes a bit of a walk, up ramps and past vendors selling programs, hats, and pennants. Hungry? Thirsty? The scent of popcorn, hot dogs, and beer tickle your senses as you walk past.

One color, one logo, predominates. Small groups and families walk together wearing uniforms of their own making – T-shirts in team colors and khaki shorts on this warm evening.

How far up? Is that why the ticket was half-price? I gaze at the steep steps, pull in a breath of determination, and climb.

Great view! The parking lot within view is busy. The stands are filling. A great night for baseball.

Play Ball!
Play Ball!

Thousands of happy fans later when the home team won.

Starting Local

The world is in a sports frenzy. Nations have selected their best and sent them to Brazil. The request is simple.

Play hard. Win. Bring home the World Cup.

Several in my neighborhood are planning for the future. They run. They kick. They make up a few of their own rules to accommodate their understanding and physical capabilities.

Some will go on to play on organized teams. The youth leagues are popular here. Many schools have programs. At least one of the local universities has a good history and reputation.

Run. Kick. Score. Over and over and over. In cool weather and on warm sunny days. Take a water break when it gets hot.

Training Ground

Making plans for early tomorrow. Need to be alert and out of the house earlier in the morning than usual.  Yes, I know it’s the weekend.

When a large metropolitan area decides to use a weekend full of events to highlight physical fitness and activity it has a ripple effect. People like me, normal citizens, sign on the dotted line and commit to participation. We talk to family and friends, encouraging them to join us or to support the charity we represent.

Training takes time. Repetition. Determination.

I’m one of the lucky ones. (Or know my own limits.) A 5K at walking speed calculates out to walking without a break for an hour. Our route will include some hills, degree of gentleness is open to discussion. So practice sessions outside is encouraged. The winter of 2014 encouraged more walking at the mall, taking the steps between levels, and keeping safe.

The runners had a more difficult training assignment due to weather. They had to take advantage of every fine day we were granted. Even if it forced them to run in circles.

Level and comfy.

Closing Ceremony

The Winter Olympics of 2014 are complete.

They ended with a flourish. Flags. Music. Athletes marching and waving at the crowd.

The participants have scattered now. They packed up skates, skis, and bobsleds along with personal possessions. And a few shiny new medals. Now they are back in their everyday world. Some are practicing their sport. A few announced retirements and will now do sports for pleasure. Another portion will return to balancing that “day job” with training for the next event.

May I propose another closing ceremony?

I’d like to wish WINTER a fond farewell. Please don’t return until you’re scheduled in late December.

This opinion is brought to you by a person that usually enjoys cold sunny days and a little snow more than most. I like the variety of weather in the American Midwest. But really…. isn’t your three months up yet? Please yield the stage to spring before the vernal equinox. Please. Pretty please.

I’ll step back now. I’ll be good — dress in coat, boots, hat, and gloves — when I go for my next walk. I’ll try to be patient. And quiet. But it’s difficult.

Today – Feb 28 – is the final day to purchase Starr Tree Farm and many other Crimson Romance titles from Amazon at the reduced price of $1.99.

Winter Tracking

Birds. Squirrels. Canines. Humans large and small.

The mechanical treads of automobiles and the maintenance tractor.

The variety of tracks in our snow grows geometrically every day.

It’s something in the air this year. Or lack of something. (Temperatures above freezing.) The fresh white blanket draped over the city by Mother Nature has lingered. It picked up dirt which snowplows exposed when pushing it aside. Trees have shed late leaves and pine needles into its depths. Then, as if doing a little housekeeping — another layer arrives. Parents complain as they make arrangements for another “snow day”. Business owners grumble when customers stay home.

Dogs and children go out to play. They leave their tracks as they practice skills – running, jumping, sliding. Someone has discovered the thrill of using shaped plastic and gravity together. Future bobsledder?

Sweetheart Sports

Olympics on Valentine’s Day!

What could be better than enjoying sports with your sweetheart?

Consider age, physical condition, and inclination — and since this is 2014 Weather!

Will you start the celebration with some participation? Your own pair skating at an indoor or outdoor rink? Hit the slopes together on skis or snowboards? Find a toboggan and snowy slope for two person sledding?

Television gives options as spectators. Over hot chocolate (or adult beverages) you’ll be able to see young men leap, twirl, and spin in the figure skating finals. Or hold your breath as women’s Skeleton finals are broadcast.

Remember to exchange cards. Flowers and chocolate are nice. Also suggested — the gift of time together – whether it’s physical sport together, dinner and conversation, holding hands watching the Olympics, or a sport of your own devising.

Snow and Ice — Very, very nice.

They’re here! The Winter Olympics 2014 Edition.

So much to follow. So much to learn as new events are added. Did you know the ladies ski jumping is new this time? Watch the men (and women) fly.

Ice, ice, ice enables figure skating, speed skating, hockey, and curling. Winter sports moved indoors, away from the threat of wind, snow, or sleet. Watch the contestants glide and turn and race and sweep.

Outdoor sports are not neglected. Bobsled teams compete with two and four athletes per sled. Down the run, up on the outside curves, settling back on the straight and across the finish before the spectators can draw a deep breath. I don’t want to look at luge and skeleton contestants whiz past. Skiing exhilarates and thrills in downhill, slalom, giant slalom. Snowboarders twist and flip on a single small platform. While jumpers soar with perfect form.

And then we come to one of my favorites. A sport with practical, military roots.  This is the biathlon, the melding of Nordic skiing and shooting.  Strength, endurance and accuracy required to perform in this contest that’s difficult to view on television.

Which one is your favorite?  Will a new hero/heroine emerge to garner world-wide acclaim?

Winter Fun

Winter = the coldest season of the year.

At least that’s the summary portion of the first dictionary definition.

This year it happens that “coldest” is even more chilling than usual. Still we have days of sunshine mixed among those of cloud. And at the latitude of St. Louis a day of above freezing does a lot to shrink the remains of the most recent snow.

Most years the ski, sled, snowman season is short. The regional commercial ski area depends on snow machines and the owners cross their fingers that temperatures stay on the cool side.

This year they are in luck. The snowstorm from early in the month has melted and compacted, leaving only modest dirty lumps where plows pushed giant piles. A little work from nature. Timely use of technology. A drive. A rental fee.

Wheeeeeeeeeee!!!!
